Doug’s review published on Letterboxd:
I really wanted to watch this after reading the book because, after reading the book, I was just left with a sense of "...well that was just a bunch dark stuff that happened." Which is fine-- but I also felt like I was missing some subtext or underlying message.
After seeing the film adaptation, I'm not so sure I did-- or if I did, I don't know that I care enough to dig into it. This story is very much elevated by the all-star cast, great editing, and pretty solid direction, which leaves it to the story to carry it toward a higher rating. But in the end, with such a cluttered assortment of stories, it just never quite got there enough for me.
It still got somewhere, and I still enjoyed the execution and effort, just don't expect something jaw-dropping.
