For me, the movie is entirely the batshit side characters, of which there are plenty. The relationship between Gary and Alana was stupid and alien to me. I do not understand their heterosexual monogomy-brained struggle. Tired of filmmakers thinking that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is an invitation to Jack off cumshot boring boomer nostalgia all over the screen too

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I loved the first half of this movie. It’s too bad that when they go to New York, the quality of the work goes to shit a-la Hazard. I really hate Japanese movies that cast English actors like this and especially when they try and set shit in America. How can you have a line like “this is a white mans world, there’s no room for black or yellow skinned people” and then also have every single spooky black person in the movie try and gang murder our protagonist?

It plants the seeds for a lot of movies I like a lot, and the melancholic trapped in small town vibe is very much here. I just wish it was executed by someone who had a little more control of their vision, a little more focused. I see a lot of this movie in Ham On Rye, which is a full fledged masterpiece, as opposed to the “good enough” this movie is.

Watching this straightforwardly and taking It seriously is kind of a fool’s errand. The script takes baffling moral stances and does not give any coherent motive or reasoning to most characters or their actions. That being said the film was entertaining enough to keep my attention for the entire runtime. I began to wonder if there was a way to watch this film (obviously not as intended by anyone involved in making it) in a meta sense where you basically…

It wasn't until the final episode that my feelings really solidified. Maybe solidified isn't the right word, more like dramatically intensified. The feelings were always there, but they were soft before. They were gentle. Melancholic, understated, gentle. Until the ending hit me. Like a train I couldn't dodge.

Please be kind to people, don't give up on your friends. Even when all seems lost, there is always a way.
