Dennis’s review published on Letterboxd:
I know everyone else will probably say the same thing, but Cate Blanchett was phenomenal. I haven’t really watched her shine in anything else I’ve seen. I’m so glad she had nearly 3 hours to show off her chops here, because the movie was all about her and I was completely taken in by her performance. The story itself and the ideas around power and relationships were interesting enough to keep me engaged, but the character study was one of the best I’ve seen.
There were times where I wished for more of the music, because it was amazing and really moving, but the movie wasn’t about music at all. So, I do respect Field’s choice to not let any music take focus away from the character at center stage.
