There is something oddly comforting and relaxing about watching The Thing. I watch it just as much for the hanging out vibes as I do the horror vibes. And when I finish watching it, I always want to watch it again.

The aesthetics of late-90s and early-2000s made-for-TV movies are like comfort food for me. The lighting is always wrong and everything looks fake, but they sure do make me feel good. Terror Tract is a great example—bound to be forgotten by everyone, but filled with wonderfully dated visuals and predictable plot twists. Case in point: A bearded John Ritter is the frame story cryptkeeper in this anthology universe for god’s sake. Recommended if you are into this sort of thing, and you probably already know if you are.

Halloween is soon. Check out my Never-Ending Horror Anthology-A-Thon.

  • Déjà Vu

    Déjà Vu

    ★★★★

Other than Deja Vu raising more questions than answers, it’s a very compelling film. If the shakey timeline and time travel elements would’ve been slightly reworked, it would probably be included in contemporary sci-fi film conversations. The car chase scene is easily one of the most anxiety inducing car chases I have ever seen. Really can’t believe I slept on the Scott/Denzel collabs for so long.

It took two days to finish this movie. When my girlfriend and I started it the second day she said, “do you think she’ll kill him now?” And I think that’s really the best takeaway. Fuck this movie and this dude. Punshible by death. Negative 10 stars.

    Heat

    ★★★★★

Heat is a masterpiece of pure artistic vision. No one does procedural and crime films like Michael Mann, especially procedurals of cops and criminals at the top of their game. He is able to mix the professional and domestic lives of multiple characters with a preternatural ease. It’s a masterclass in direction, editing, narrative structure, dialogue, basically everything that makes a good film.
