Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ★★½

The first half feels more like an old-fashioned martial arts tale than a superhero film but in the final hour it loses much of that originality.

With a deeply personal goal that resonates with his entire family, the Mandarin is chilling and cruel, yet retains just enough humanity that audiences can feel some sympathy. Tony Leung delivers a knockout performance as Wenwu. Wenwu’s arc in the film is more resonant than even Shang-Chi’s. Awkwafina’s character has no reason to be involved in the plot. The film boasts first-rate fight and chase scenes. It's better than a lot of Marvel superhero films by a longshot.
