The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse ★★★★★

Even in an 1890s setting, concluding with what is essentially a deep fried meme is beyond satisfying...and absolutely mind shattering...

Both Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson continue to prove why they’re easily two of the finest actors working today. Just having them at each other’s throats, particularly with the flawlessly delivered nautical dialectic, creates such an intense experience. Perhaps the greatest dom/sub switch relationship dynamic without even intending to go into that territory.

The slow burn pacing is some of the most rewarding I’ve found in cinema recently. Having to see the mundane yet difficult work of a wickie, along with the constant foghorn sounds truly forces the audience into the mindset of these characters. Nothing is spoon fed, with ample gorgeously symbolic imagery that I simply can’t get out of my head. Robert Eggers has really already proven himself as an original and creative horror icon.

Don’t insult the cook...
