the thing that miyazaki does best is his characters are so full of depth and fleshed-out, to the point where all of the fantastical stuff actually seems mundane in comparison.
part of the criticism levied against this film is that it isn’t as ”deep” as other studio ghibli films, but i think that’s what makes it so charming. this is a comfort film at its finest.
