With mesmerising pacing, a unique perspective of both Indigenous rights and the drug trade in Colombia, an unforgettable contemplativeness, and what are some of the most subtly heightened emotions I've felt watching any film, Birds of Passage (alongside Embrace of the Serpent) defines distinctively that Ciro Guerra is one of the most important filmmakers working in the modern world, and will die a beloved visionary of the medium.

For the entire five hours I didn't leave my seat, mesmerised I was by what to the poetically illiterate is nothing but to the patient viewer is everything. The haunting, charming, warming, timeless narrations of Jonas Mekas were full of stunning flourish and gave powerful depth and insights into the small moments amplified onscreen.
