i didn’t know that this was gonna be a slow burnnnn, and roughly halfway through i had to surrender to its unexpected slower pace, which i’m glad i did. widows is marketed as an action film, when it’s actually a dark character based drama, and these characters are great. the performances are brilliant too. there were moments when i was a little bored (mostly all of the colin farrell stuff) but it was the women at its heart that kept me engaged. viola davis continues to be a god also.
widows is a film that seems to reject the ‘strong’ female idea that has been appearing in recent films, but does it better than any female centric/gender swapping film has. it shows different sides of strength, and shows these women as people. sure guns are fired, and action takes place, but it is far from the focus. it is about how these characters are vulnerable, broken to some extent, but in the end they have to be resilient in the face of grief and pain. not that it’s really my place because i am a male after all, but this is what should be empowering
