Maybe the sequel not being as good is actually part of the meta thing. I still really enjoyed it and for a horror sequel this was far better than most. The pacing was a bit off, the slasher scenes weren't as tense, and the twist wasn't as plausible or smart. Although, I do live for Laurie Metcalf's hilarious overacting. Like it's campy and fun but the original is a fucking masterpiece. This is a movie that's probably best watched with like snacks and friends.
