Mesmerizing. This is one of the most beautiful films you'll ever see. It plays like a waking dream. The colors are rich and textured, the lighting as well. The direction, as you would expect from Kieslowski, is impeccable and paced to perfection. The score is tremendous. I mean, seriously. There are very few films I've seen use music to its advantage in order to set tone and even drive the narrative along than this one. The best being Bleu, which is also directed by Kieslowski, but I digress.
But the real standout is Irene Jacob. She's captivating. I didn't just hang on her every word, but her every movement, every gesture-- the way she smoked a cigarette or held a glass. And it's not just because she is beautiful. There's a certain elegance there, and she exudes it. Bottom line, this is one of the most brilliant performances of the decade by an actress in one of the most beautiful films of all-time. Stop whatever goofy shit you are doing right now and watch it. No, scratch that. Experience it.
