After Hours

After Hours ★★★★½

A whimsical, dark, absurd nocturnal odyssey that is both egregiously pointless and casually existential. Truly unpredictable and exciting, capturing the capricious chaos of urban life. More out there than most Scorsese joints, and a lot more willing to have fun, experiment, and be gleefully incoherent. There's an ENERGY to this movie that I don't get even from Scorsese's more widely acclaimed works. Love the stilted dialogue, love the random characters with no rooting in reality, love the actual sense of danger lurking throughout it all, especially in Rosanna Arquette's wonderfully discombobulating and tragic performance.

It's the kind of movie that has an uncomfortable drive behind it that I'd like to harness in my own work.
