some post-goodfellas/moonstruck z-grade mozzarella. the star, michael della femina, has just the faint traces of an italian accent, and everyone else seems to be trying to make up for that. the props and costumes look like paper, and all of the gigilo stuff is pretty bad. however, it manages to be mostly fun for about forty minutes with gandolfini as the imposing heavy who runs a poker game in the basement of the protagonist's pizzeria. it stumbles into some nice images, with lots of long takes that seem more out of budgetary constraint than stylistic ambition, the type a good poverty row noir would have. the pivot to being a christmas movie in the last fifteen minutes is quite a choice.
