Copenhagen Cowboy 2023
A six-hour long feast for the senses brought to life by one of the most polarizing filmmakers in modern cinema? Sign me up!
In Copenhagen Cowboy, Nicolas Winding Refn sucks you deeper into his strange alternate universe than ever before. A universe in which everything is drenched in neon, people communicate by pensive staredowns, and vile men literally squeel like pigs. Similar to Refn's more recent efforts, this one is not for the impatient. Neither is it for people that…

Copenhagen Cowboy 2023
"I've dedicated my life to travelling the world and teaching people a new sexuality. It's about the power one has when one possesses a cock."
The other great 2022 mini-series from a Danish auteur turns out to be Nicolas Winding Refn's second venture into the TV medium, and there are multiple reasons why it's another terrific addition to the Neongasmic late phase he's been developing since Only God Forgives:
- The opening of each episode is hand-signed "by NWR".

Blonde 2022
I think it’s worth noting that Andrew Dominik never intended to make a biopic about Marilyn Monroe’s life and accomplishments and who she was as a person, and I don’t think it’s fair to be mad at him for not making that. I think it’s also worth noting that what he made instead is an overlong ~Lynchian~ experiment that attempts to explore the nightmarish existence of being a living American myth, but has so little insight that all it actually…

Babylon 2022
Wild. Wild! WILD!!
Babylon is a three-hour roller coaster about early Hollywood, the transition from silent film to talkies and the rise and fall of stars. It is an ode to film history, movie magic and the power of cinema. It is a strong expression of love for the most wonderful art form, but also works as a satire on the film industry and movie moguls of that era.
Not even ten minutes have passed and we have already seen… -
Babylon 2022
Watched in the cinema (8th visit in 2023)
According to Damien Chazelle, "Babylon" is a declaration of hate for Hollywood, but a declaration of love for films. What may sound a little strange at first - after all, these things are actually connected - the film explains broadly, unmistakably and extremely shamelessly in 189 minutes. The math doesn't quite add up, but this wild ride is nevertheless one of the boldest and most exuberant works since Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf…

Babylon 2022
Mark.

Velvet Buzzsaw 2019
Velvet Buzzsaw
Judging from the mixed to good reviews, I'm a sucker for controversial films that split the gamut down the middle. I'll admit though, the first 40 minutes I watched with more than enough beers swilling around my stream. Woke up today and finished it. So I guess what I'm saying is that the first half of the film never gripped me. I wasn't invested in any of this ensemble, except maybe Gyllenhaal, who seems to pull a good…

Velvet Buzzsaw 2019
“Seriously, I’m really scared.” -Morf
I'm really surprised. The day after it came out, I started watching it. It wasn't even trending on Netflix! The current 6.0 score on IMDB is laughable. It's no genius film. It's not Nightcrawler, but hey, it's better than 6.0. Maybe it's just me. I like "art" film. Artsy films, yeah, but films on actual art too. Cool. It was like Dan Gilroy saw The Square and said, "I want to make a horror film…
