The first chunk is some of the most boring, excruciatingly mind numbing stuff I've ever watched. But when this picks up, dear lord is it transcendent. I did not expect some of the turns and really connected with it. Mesmerizing. Haunting. Beautiful. I hated so much of this movie. I loved so much of this movie.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Changing the lyric "This is modern feminism talking, I expect to run the world in shoes I cannot walk in" to "watch me as I run the world in shoes I cannot walk in" exemplifies the problem with this movie. It has no edge, no bite. Mean Girls - the original movie and the Broadway show - is a satire. By refusing to really critique or damn any of its characters, this remake feels empty, cheap, and yes, plastic.
