Contained and tender, really appreciated seeing this story told, the film at its best in the moments you can feel are most personal to Chung.
Keeping an eye (ear?) on composer Emile Mosseri, another beautiful score from him.
Shattering. Judy Garland is phenomenal. I think I can still feel her performance of ‘The Man Who Got Away’ reverberating through my bones a day later.
And James Mason! So moved by his take on Norman Maine, particularly the moments at the Oscar ceremony and when he leaves the court and whispers to Esther, “I’m so tired”. His final scene will stay with me for a long time - the ocean, the sunset, Judy singing in the distance... Quietly devastating. “This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, with a whimper.”
Wish real life were in technicolour.
