I've never been so disgusted by a movie than when that guy kept burning off the skin from the back of his head and eating it. Somehow I'm more desensitized to fictional cannibalism than that. I also never thought I'd see the day that a chainsaw became a phallic symbol. Lots of firsts from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
Starts off strong with an absurd first kill featuring Leatherface madly waving his chainsaw around while standing on the back of a pickup that was somehow reversing at breakneck speeds. It helps that the victims were so infuriating. I thought for sure the outrageousness of the intro couldn't be topped, but then it got a serious run for its money when Leatherface basically climaxed with a chainsaw. He became a more dangerous and grosser version of Sloth from The Goonies after that, with Stretch as his muse instead of Chunk. Quite the character arc.
Though I liked the campy additions of this sequel, it's way too uneven. The cannibal hideout is a boring setting after a short while. The other baddies are annoying in anything more than small doses. The incessant screaming from Stretch is also too much. Definitely not enough Dennis Hopper throughout. It's a shame that the second half shares almost none of the appeal of the first half.
