“I’d rather be Mary Shelley- she died a widow.”

This film is a bloody and beautiful mix of Shelley, The Brontë sisters, Poe, Oscar Wilde, and even Shirley Jackson, and of course it is undeniably Guillermo del Toro, and I loved every single second of it. I guess it’s a hit or miss with most audiences, but I feel like this was made for the perfect little niche of everything I love, from a literary and cinematic sense. Definitely over the top but aren’t all of the Gothic stories we know and love? This is DEFINITELY one of my new absolute favorites.

This movie made me laugh and cry with happiness/pure joy and was so INTENSELY relatable. The quintessential coming of age story for a girl in high school/going to college/relationships/growing up. So beautiful, funny, real, heartwarming, i loved every single second

Cinematic brilliance is Gyllenhaal's character sitting in the bar with his little blue drink saying "I love to read. I enjoy books."
