I put off watching this for so long because I didn't think it could possibly be as good as The Room, but I was wrong! It might even be better! Okay, that's a lie, I put off watching it because it's almost two hours long. So I'm giving this the highest compliment I can as someone who groans at anything longer than 100 minutes... this film was exactly as long as it needed to be.
So this raises the question, what happens if you're kidnapped, raped, held in a small room with your child for five years and hatch a daring escape plan, only for people on the outside to be giant dicks to you?? Okay, only two people were giant dicks, but that's two dicks too many! What was up with Bill Macy Dad? He acts like a dick, leaves, and he's never seen or mentioned again. That was the only part that was like "huh?" for me because there was no resolution, it's just like "dad's randomly a dick, okay."
Then that reporter lady. There'd be a special place in Hell for that lady if she existed. Sure, give an abuse survivor a severe guilt complex and see what happens! Great job! Luckily our main characters were strong enough to overcome it, and this has about the best ending I could imagine. That was really powerful. This was a great movie with excellent performances, especially Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. And Seamus of course, what a GOOD BOY
(I think I'm gonna spend this week finally knocking out some A24 films I've wanted to see, as well as some horror sequels! I like to mix it up.)
