Red Rocket

Red Rocket ★★★★

Sean Baker keeps positioning himself as one of the most interesting voices in contemporary independent cinema, as well as being the chronicler of one of the many faces of the United States. In Red Rocket the filmmaker offers a portrait of Trump's America made up of a gallery of marginal beings and misery. The story centres on Mikey Saber, a charismatic, manipulative, and unscrupulous former porn star on the decline who returns to his native Texas and soon finds an opportunity to try to get back on top. Through his protagonist, superbly played by Simon Rex, and with a good dose of humour, Baker manages to capture a bleak, grey reality and a reflection on the corrupted American dream that also shows enough hints of how terrible the straight porn industry can be.
