A trainwreck, a high-water mark. Cassavetes is so good at catching the anxiety of being surrounded by slight distortions. Gaslighting, toxic magnetism, two people doomed and inseparable. It's so difficult to watch these two but I want so much more. Of course it's 2 1/2hrs. It should be. Frustration is essential. Casasavetes makes movies so hard to listen to while someone is sleeping, they go from so quiet to so loud so quickly. Everyone is on the verge of breaking, looking for an excuse to let loose. The exhaustion of everyday life, expectations, owing something.
