One of the most devastating films, live-action or animated, that I've ever seen. The unrelenting horror of war and its destruction of the bonds of society is tragically and beautifully conveyed through an otherwise small story of two orphans. Even with the bleak fate of the two children, you still see that Ghibli magic/whimsy in their creation of a home by the pond. Definitely a film I'd want to revisit despite the heavy weight it put on my soul the first time through.
