I, Tonya

I, Tonya ★★★½

I, Tonya is an odd film to watch, but an easy one to review. Everything I, Tonya does well it does insanely well (performances, plot structure, mapping out scenes with the camera, nailing the emotional notes.) and everything it doesn’t is barely passable (how it handles abuse like it’s a punchline, obnoxious soundtrack, how badly it wants to be Wolf of Wall Street, the VFX on the ice are suspect as hell)

Margot Robbie carries this entire film on her back, and she is what makes the film worth it in the end. Her performance sets the tone which every other actor needs to follow, and the cast does an excellent job in capturing this weird, bipolar tone. Even though Sally Hawkins is charming as hell, Margot Robbie broke the fucking door down and stole the best performance of 2018 for me. I Tonya may be iffy in moments, but the fantastic moments are all worth it, and Margot Robbie is a fucking Superstar.
