I’m absolutely in awe of this creative and consistently surprising film. A nocturnal, urban genre mix about friendship with elements of slapstick comedy, sports movies, gangster films, and even some surreal moments.
For me the main genre category that informs this film is musicals. So much information about the characters (their flaws, aspirations, the growing bond between them) is conveyed through movement and color. Sooryavanshi

    ★★★½

Sooryavanshi revives a vanishing film form, the old-fashioned masala entertainer. This is the first Hindi film I saw in a theater since February 2020, and it is exactly what I wanted the return of popular Hindi cinema to be.

An astonishing film of rich textures, raw yet beautiful images, colors. It is set among the members of a tribe in Russia in 1998. It is a thoughtful exploration of religious frictions, meaningless violence, and being a woman in such a society. Kidnapping is a daily occurrence, devastation and poverty are everywhere, women are always silent. The film has an unforgettable heroine, who is asked to marry a guy so that her family can get the ransom money for her…

    April's Daughter

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

A woman steals the baby of her own teenage daughter and starts an affair with her daughter's boyfriend as well. Yet she isn't a monster; the daughter is truly incapable of taking care of the baby, the physical attraction between the mother and the boyfriend, and the boyfriend's willingness are convincingly depicted. The mother feels that her daughter robbed her of her youth, and possibly all this is an act of revenge. This is a complex film of difficult moral…
