The Beguiled ★★★★½

Coppola's best film since Lost in Translation is a hypnotically beautiful, moody tale of female desire under oppression, in various forms. It has an almost perverse sense of humor, which somehow successfully coexists with its dreamy, serene atmosphere. There is rivalry, jealousy, suppressed desire, newly discovered desire, playful hints of eroticism. It is sensual and psychologically complex, you never know who is seducing who, who tells a lie. The apple pie scene is hilarious. The ensemble is very strong. A strong contender in Cannes 2017.
