Eren Odabasi’s review published on Letterboxd:
Such stories of impossible romance are always affecting and this is a particularly gorgeous example. There is a superbly shot snow storm sequence, the two leads are lit carefully and beautifully throughout. Gary Cooper’s star persona is always enjoyable as well.
I also loved the parallels between the main story and the novel the protagonist (an author) is writing.
The only problem is the negative stereotypes in the depiction of Polish and Japanese characters. Apparently, Hollywood in the 1930s was not very sensitive in terms of minority representation and racial stereotyping.
I look forward to seeing more films by Vidor.
