After a tough couple of days, this film was a total godsend. It was EXACTLY what I needed. I laughed, I cried, I sung, but mostly I just had a really good time.
I’ll be honest: it did take me a while to get into it, but once I did, nothing could have wiped that grin off of my face. It was just such a fun film to watch.
Seeing all of the characters that we are familiar with from the first film discover themselves and being able to see how they came to be and how they ended up in Kalokairi was really great because it allowed me to develop a new understanding and appreciation for the present day plot and what drives every character, so it is nice to now have that background.
It easily succeeds in achieving what it wants to, as long as you aren’t paying too close attention to details, because it was very disloyal to some of the facts stated in the first film (eg. Donna’s mom being dead and all the boys looking so different when they were young compared to how they were actually made to look) which is a shame because it seems like it was made without a care for details or preserving the other film, but instead just for financial purposes.
I wouldn’t say it surpassed the first film, but was it ever going to? No. It succeeded in it’s goal of being a feel-good film that everyone can enjoy and I can’t wait to go and see it again!
