  • John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

    John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum 2019

    ★★★★½ Rewatched by Noah Thompson 08 Sep 2022 3

    This is my quest
    To follow that star
    No matter how hopeless
    No matter how far

Relentless. If you have to sum up Parabellum in one word, it's that. It's not just that in its filmmaking but in the narrative itself. John is clearly tired. One of the best aspects about this series is that while John of course plows through countless nameless thugs, he's not doing it like a superhero. Each kill requires effort, precision, and a little bit…

It deeply upsets me that the Oscars don't have a category for choreography.

There's a sense of wide-eyed wonder that overcomes me in certain moviegoing experiences that makes me feel the way I imagine everybody on this website felt when they first saw a spectacle like Star Wars as a child. As soon as that feeling hits me, all sense of critical objectivity goes out the window. I don't care to think about any lifeless, trope-ridden dialogue or over-explicit sequel…

If someone asked me to explain the concept of “pure cinema” I would show them the first 20 minutes of this movie. And possibly the scene where the High Table transports their armored goons to the Continental on charter buses with their little logo on the side.

Dirk Diggler: What do you mean, "state"? State? State of California? I know where the fuck I am, Jack.

WAVES is a lyrically complicated look at teenage romance built around a singular disaster, one that bleakly spirals outward and devastates everyone closest to the epicenter. The grief piles up high and packs a sharp wallop to the gut, as it sets up a difficult drama around the ways our families support and fail us simultaneously.

Families matter to Shults. Families are the building blocks of society, however imperfect, that provide the conflict and solution on which these characters hang…

didn't always work for me, and sometimes it gets carried away with its own ambition, but i adored the latter half. i think waves is at its best when it focuses on forgiveness.

I totally understand why so many people hate this with a passion: it's a tonal and structural mess, the pacing is all over the place, the dialogue is really hammy at times, it's an assault to the senses with its non-stop frenetic camerawork and blaring soundtrack.

But, I think it's honestly kinda fitting that this is such a beautiful mess. As someone who's experiencing a similar pressure from everywhere around as Tyler does, life can be just a total mess…

A gorgeous, heartbreaking film that will force you to reflect on yourself at every turning point in the story. One of the most painful movies I have ever experienced
    And the fucking soundtrack
