me finishing this film: now we don't have time to unpack ALL of that
every Guillermo Del Toro movie is like “women fight fascism by fucking murdering the fascists. also magic is a metaphor for the Other” and he’s correct
but actually here are a few things I really really loved about this movie:
➽the shots and the the cinematography of it is really wonderful and beautiful. so many of these are just... gorgeous
➽Mercedes’ characterization in particular is wonderful and so well conveyed
➽the special effects of the Faun and the
a fantastic, two-hour-long, gorgeously filmed power play between two powerhouse actors, with a quality feminist narrative underlying it all. but also some very very weird transphobia in there which I don't like or trust.
Jodie Foster is... fucking awesome in this movie. her character is not even graduated from the FBI, and we get that, and Hannibal gets that. but she is also a powerhouse in her own way; she is smart, clever, unafraid to be manipulative and toy with…
