thinking about the guy we saw walking out of the earlier showing who was grabbing his girlfriend’s arm very hard as he explained his Thoughts.

anyway i'm not gonna lie i was kind of expecting something self-consciously absurdist and twee, my memories of loving holy motors as an idiot college freshman having scared me off a rewatch of that film for almost a decade. instead the film strikes a really nice balance between carax's off-kilter wit and a tone of overwhelming sadness. a lot of people are going to say that this film lacks grounding in emotional reality, so far removed from humanity by carax's visual exuberance and parodic social commentary, but if you don't get teary at the final scene then imo you're the one without a soul. i've grown too much from my theater kid days to truly rave about this movie, but it's tender and moving in ways i did not expect.
