A lot of thought has gone into the details, every actor and prop is perfectly placed to reflect character conflict. It's staged like a theatrical production made cinematic with some stylish direction, almost as though De Palma secretly made this bitter comedy while stuffed into a DeVito costume. Not to belittle Danny DeVito though, his directing is often overlooked but this strange film is worthy of attention. Slipping between farce, drama then going into full horror mode for the final showdown and, comparing that to the synthetic fairytale beginning of the film, the variety of vision and skill on show is impressive.

A different film about a high level drug dealer would've shown Ed Norton rising through the ranks of the criminal world, glamorizing life at the top. I respect 25th Hour for skipping that and going straight to aftermath, regret and reckoning with the harm done to others.

This is pretty much the experience when going to an Odeon cinema except instead of demons it's doughy children full of blue drink and sherbet.

When I was a kid, my mum would record cartoons and TV shows to VHS and I'd watch them on repeat. I've seen the 'Lost in the Labyrinth' episode of Ulysses 31 about fifty times. One tape had a Disney clip show that previewed scenes of That Darn Cat, Superdad and the disguising in soot sequence of 101 Dalmatians. That's all I'd seen of the film until now. It's magnificent. The art style evokes 1920's illustrations of Parisian cafés, Pongo and Purdy are diligent parents and Cruella is a maniac. I'll be singing the Cruella De Vil song for days.
