Cube 2: Hypercube

Cube 2: Hypercube ★★

Film #2 of 31 in my HoopTober 7.0 challenge. The second of a franchise.

Bumped this one up earlier in my challenge than planned, since it's on Tubi's "Leaving Soon" queue. That said, this series seems to get puff-puff-passed on the regular, so it's no doubt destined for another streaming service soon.

After the fun first entry in the franchise which served as a booby-trapped crucible for well-defined characters, Cube 2: Hypercube takes the premise into new dimensions. Unlike the first, however, most roles feel flattened into little more than an identity.

There's also a surprising lack of variance in the rooms. Even lines indicating a "shift" in gravity weren't necessarily replicated visually as our unwitting group passed clearly between identically oriented spaces. It's easy to be disappointed in the squandered potential here.

I feel similarly about this second entry as I do for the sequel to The Collector—that it expands too far beyond what made the first so suspenseful and turns out a lot less fun as a result.
