evan’s review published on Letterboxd:
Need to watch this at least 10 more times to gather any coherent thoughts on it, but after sitting on it for a few days: fuck it, 5 stars.
For better or for worse (that’s up to you), this is Shyamalan at his most Shyamalan. It’s hard to imagine anyone else pulling this off in the way he did. What M. Night demonstrates here is a filmmaker with total control over his vision, one who knows exactly what he wants to do and won’t let anyone change his mind. It’s as if he ran away with the studio’s money and locked them out of the editing room. It’s bold and it’s risky, but I respect the hell out of it. He’s seriously just flexing at this point. King shit if you ask me.
With Old, M. Night once again solidifies himself as one of the most innovative and exciting directors working today. Consistently pushing the medium forward and stretching its limits. What amazes me the most about him is how profound he is at capturing emotion without ever straying far from the genre he’s working in. I found myself holding my breath out of fear one minute and on the verge of tears in the next.
Hoping to write more about this and what it means to me soon, but for now: Movie of the year so far.
