Venom ★★

Genuinely really like what the script is doing, the scrappy comedy makes the movie come off like it has a permanent chip on its shoulder, and I think the material was perfectly suited for Hardy's strengths (physical presence, range, and offbeat sensibilities)...something the prestige films he was in never understood (looking at you Nolan, Inarritu). However, my two biggest issues are the structure its encumbered to, and more importantly: Fleischer's inability to direct a decent action sequence or create any stand out imagery. It's not a complete failure, and if more comic books movies were this unabashedly trashy and strange, we'd be in a better place, but I have a sneaking suspicion Serkis' sequel will make this obsolete.
