Another masterpiece by Lav Diaz. Absolutely incredible start to finish. Just one year after releasing Norte, the End of History, Lav Diaz delivers another masterpiece, this time returning to black and white. At 338 minutes, it's not one of his longer movies but it's still an epic.

From What Is Before deals with the strange events of a small Filipino village in the time leading up to and after Marcos' declaration of martial law…

Stunningly beautiful. This is a great demonstration in the texture and aesthetic you can get with shooting on film that you simply can't with video. The version I saw was completely silent which I thought was great. It reminded me of that magical feeling I had when I first watched The Passion of Joan of Arc and there wasn't a soundtrack. It's almost surreal only hearing your own breathing and nothing else, no music to guide your emotions. It's freeing and I think worked perfectly for this film.

The texture of the black and white is incredibly lucious, and the soundtrack in conjunction with the image distortion was pretty incredble. These types of experimental films are so interesting and so next level compared to experimental films of the past that largely forgot about the soundtrack and how useful that is to the film.
