Come and See 1985
I was promised that putting my hand on a hot stove would burn me but I still needed to give it a shot. Sometimes people lie. Not this time!

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
The biggest entry to the James Hong canon since maybe the eighties, which is almost enough to recommend it on its own, but I don’t know. The emotional arcs didn’t land with me. A lot of lolrandom humor that ends with twenty minutes of uninterrupted platitudes to try and make up for it. It’s odd, a lot of the reviews I’ve seen have mentioned it absolutely killing with a crowd, but my showing was almost sold out and everyone seemed kind of stone faced, except for the 2001 gag, which had me howling and I hope to watch regularly once it’s on YouTube.

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
sometimes when I listen to 100 gecs I am overwhelmed at how overwhelmingly humbling the sound of everything can be and I truly admire the full mobilization of an aesthetic circumstance —sprawl, 'hyper', spill—that make sense (to the makers) to make sense of an emotional moment and also sometimes when I listen to 100 gecs I overwhelm and admire more than I thrill or am moved (to dance, to tears) to see that world which is to say I am…

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
“When Stephen Hawking cheated on his wife, she must have felt pretty sad. It was a terrible thing to do, and I don’t want to defend him, but try thinking about it from his perspective for a moment. Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
I think Swiss Army Man and Death of Dick Long (one of my absolute favorites) work so well because there’s just one joke that gets beaten like a dead horse for the emotional core of each to really build itself around. Daniels are in a great line of music video directors who make truly original, cinematically adventurous/exciting work but this is trying so hard to be an #epicsauce RaNdOm memeified comedy movie that I could never get fully on board. also very possible everyone’s hype really hurt it for me. that said, every performance is wonderful and I see myself giving it another chance soon??

Licorice Pizza 2021
I tend to think that the only truly truly reasonable response to 'can you separate the art from the artist?' is to ask, 'well, how do I feel today?' it seems a matter of personal bandwidth, and not as regards the degree to which an audience-member is willing to be complicit, but rather, as regards determining the atom-tiny distinctions between what seems tenable and what seems dangerous in the emerging splatter-shot process of trying to render the world in an…
