Matango 1963
Corny but fun. Great sets and gross mushroom ooze. Some mid monster costumes, but also a couple awesome and silly ones. The sets are wonderful and were my favorite bit for sure.
Right off the bat the movie is going hard on a pretty scattered and weird set of class commentary objectives. The two lower-class individuals are always simultaneously completely correct and also often loathsome/bad, sometimes in entirely unmotivated and dumb ways. The upper class folks are often equally repulsive.…

The Borderlands 2013
A really fun, simple, well-made little fake horror doc!!
It has some fun horror stuff but it really hangs on a satisfying core relationship between two very different men who develop an authentic-feeling friendship over the course of the movie. I appreciated that!

Oppenheimer 2023
A tremendous and accurate depiction of a really frustrating type of nerd that I have seen and even been: the nerd so interested in ideas and achievement and velocity and accomplishment and status that they just never do anything to act on their supposed deeply held complicating beliefs... or at least, nothing which does not also increase their power. The American state was created by this specific type of nerd and they grease its wheels even today
The first time I have liked Nolan's philosophy toward audio mixing
Some great horror sequences there in the end.
