Don't Look Now 1973
It's now October tradition to see Donald Sutherland react to things in a Horror movie. This played like an Anglo-giallo mixed with a folkish possession film. It was an unsettling slow burn that played tricks on your mind. The horror comes from the unease Nicolas Roeg creates through the magnificent editing. Don't Look Now may have the best opening and ending sequence from a movie of this ilk.

The Thin Red Line 1998
Terrence Malick creates an atmosphere and tone that makes it almost impossible to accuse this film of glorifying war. The one aspect that occasionally took me out of it was the inner thoughts expressed through voiceover narration. None of the characters struck me as a sage or a poet, so I was unsure where these well-articulated thoughts came from.
