Road to Spider-Man No Way Home
Yeah I didn’t like this very much, there’s just so much that doesn’t work with this film. The writing of its characters, the comedic relief, the villains motivations, it all just flat.
Atleast with Homecoming you had that moral ground of who Peter was and what the movie wanted to do but this just didn’t sit right with me. I don’t wanna be all negative but there were things that I definitely liked. For instance, Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio is a great casting (however weak his motivations may be) and whichever scene he’s in, he steals every bit of it. The Mysterio illusions are top tier and that one little bit where Peter goes through all types of shit is one of my favourite sequences in the MCU, it’s just that good. The score by Giacchino is also really good. The final battle is alright, it’s a whole damn CG fest but it had some good moments in there.
Let’s talk about the bad, I absolutely HATE the comic relief, the humour is just so bad. Somehow they just spoilt it with their MCU humour and it didn’t land for me. Ned’s character is as useless as his relationship with Betty Brant and it’s just something that did not need to be there. Peter’s interest in MJ didn’t feel earned, it just drops in our lap outta of nowhere and it didn’t do well for me either but by the end there are some sparks.
Peter’s whole identity is just a joke here, he’s full roaming around without his mask and dropping down like nothing’s gonna happen and it just hampers Spider-Man’s character so much. I also can’t stand the teenage drama part, the movie is essentially nothing up until the Mysterio reveal. Even the Spider-Man action, the illusion in the second act is essentially the only one where I was invested. Also, let’s not talk about the cinematography because FFH just looks plain ugly. It’s the most visually bland Spider-Man movie to ever exist and I just hate it.
I love that JJJ is in this, the final illusion of revealing his identity was great and I can’t wait to see what they do with it in NWH. I just hope to god they handle it well and do justice to his character. Jon Watts has 1 hit and 1 miss for me, let’s hope he makes that 2 hits tomorrow 🤞🏽
