Mali Twist

Mali Twist ★★½

Robert Guédiguian left his usual Marseilles working class millieu and his castof regulars for a movie set in post independece Mali in the 60s. I can grasp why in the middle of some Guédiguian recent inquiries he might thought a look at young socialist in a post colonial context might be intriguing, but despikte some good performances this feels overwritten and given to some mystification his work usual avoid. Guédiguian images still have at times a power most his peers lack, but he seems to set himself a pre determine scenario more than finding one, so the tragedy never quite stings.
