In 1979 Santa Barbara, California, Dorothea Fields is a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie, at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women – Abbie, a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields' home and Julie, a savvy and provocative teenage neighbour – to help with Jamie's upbringing.

If there’s one thing that history teaches us time and time again, it’s that the past makes us feel like experts and the future makes us look like fools — we think we know where we’re going because we know where we’ve been. As the decade is coming to a close I’m trying to catch up on a few hidden gems that I missed for whatever reason, this being a huge one.
20th Century Women is awkward at times with it’s pacing and dialogue. Certain conversations last as much as 3 lines and end there. It feels a little all over the place and I think that’s what I love. It works as a collection of details that, in some way, shape someone in the scene. The moments that shape you aren’t those that feel like that’s their main purpose, it’s those moments of true impulsiveness. This movie makes me want to make dumb decisions and get my shit together at the same time!

this movie makes me so unbelievably happy. i see a little bit of myself in every character; i grow to love them like they’re my own little unconventional family. 20th century women is the cinematic equivalent of being wrapped up in a warm blanket.
There should be a much bigger culture organized around appreciating and not forgetting this movie. A key text for lost boys raised by women.
