An abundance of style will never be a problem for Kim-Jee woon. Of his revenge films, A Bittersweet Life is the most balanced and, because of a beautiful restraint in the first act, the most compelling.
Most revenge films follow a distinct pattern, of which only the really brilliant ones diverge. One of the things I have enjoyed about Kim Jee-woon's work is the director's penchant for violence and how he depicts it in an aesthetically pleasing way. Whether it's a horror film or a comedy, he has a way of pulling you into the action scenes almost instantly.
Likewise, and like almost every director and cinematographer in South Korea, they both have a keen eye for cinematography, and they stage the characters to make them flow with the same fluidity the camera moves through the scene, resulting in more exciting and interesting sequences. This is definitely my sort of thing. A Bittersweet Life is a beautiful movie that is filled with violence and thrills and I LOVE beautiful movies filled with violence and thrills. The score is great, the cinematography is lovely, and the script is so simple and engaging that I really find it difficult to understand how anyone could avoid getting caught up in this wonderful movie. As I'm typing this I have goosebumps from the ending... I love it.

I think this latest rewatch has solidified A Bittersweet Life as Kim Jee-woon's greatest film for me. A director that seems to enjoy changing genres and tones from film to film, here created one that manages to be beautiful, elegant, brutal and violent all at once. Call it a gangster film, a revenge film or a thriller it doesn't matter, it's simply great storytelling and film making.

It's not so much that there's no moral honor among thieves, but that honor is a liability. Sun-woo's intense loyalty to his boss is absolute right up to the moment that he cannot bring himself to condemn the boss's young moll and her boyfriend to death, a show of grace that portends his own doom. Kim Jee-woon is an exceptional action filmmaker, and he makes Sun-woo's skirmishes burst with short, brutal domination. The choreography is intricate, but Kim never goes for any kind of balletic elegance, only the brute force of a man who knows how to win fights as quickly as possible.
