Michael Peña stars in this inspiring true story of a young migrant farmworker, Jose Hernandez, with a dream to become an astronaut. It hits a lot of familiar beats, but that doesn’t mean the emotional beats have any less impact. It’s a moving story of perseverance and sacrifice that’s given a massive assist from Rosa Salazar as Jose’s irresistibly charming wife and partner. I’m more and more impressed with Salazar after each new role. An enjoyable and inspiring biopic.
Degrees of Kevin Bacon: 2
1. Rosa Salazar and Sandra Bullock in Bird Box
2. Sandra Bullock and Kevin Bacon in Loverboy
A Million Miles Away felt confused by what it wanted to be and didn’t fully embrace its own story. It either needed to focus solely on being a true to itself biopic with a more serious, dramatic and even inspirational theme or just be a flat out comedy. Michael Peña has showed in plenty of roles that he can be hilarious and knows how to use his comedic timing perfectly. He wasn’t utilised enough in this capacity and the humour the film did try to explore, just missed the mark.
Some have a dream that they chase,
With no backup dream just in case,
He'll keep applying,
Learn about flying,
Hoping to go into space.
This was way better than I thought it would be I enjoyed this a lot. Good job on Michael Peña for not coming back to Ant Man especially when you have this!
Overall good
3.6/5
I’m just like him fr

Despite the biopic 101 conventions, I appreciated "A Million Miles Away".
I wasn't aware of Jose Hernandez, a Mexican-American, who's known as the first migrant farm worker to go to space. The man in the lead role, Michael Peña, went along way to my enjoyment.I've appreciated him for over a decade now. It's rare that he gets lead roles. Now he's got one in a film he can really be proud of. Not so much for the critics but for who this is really geared to. This is the kind of uplifting film that general audiences crave. It's hard to be overly cynical about it.
There were times when the cliches did wear at me. You know the drill, father…
"A Million Miles Away" is a simple and uplifting rags to riches biopic of Jose Hernandez, a migrant farmhand who after a lifetime of trying, finally realises his dreams of being an astronaut.
It admittedly feels like it read the 'how to do a biopic 101 book' but that doesn't stop it from being a genuinely heartfelt and fun watch, with a great Michael Pena lead performance.

My Last Review: | Saw X |
Conventional; familiar; long; paint-by-numbers; predictable; TV-ish; underwhelming.
Even if Amazon's A Million Miles Away isn't in the pantheon of great grounded space flight movies, I'm still a sucker for what it does. I love realistic films about space travel... Apollo 13, The Right Stuff, Gravity, The Martian, and Interstellar. So I was the Prime (pun intended) candidate for this film.
The flick introduces us to Hernandez as the son of a migrant farmworker struggling to make a life for his family. Hernandez has an aptitude for math and science so his teacher and family encourage him and he grows up to be a NASA engineer.
Michael Peña and Rosa Salazar pull off their real life characters well. The film champions their marriage and Mexican-American roots which is…
A pretty straight forward underdog story that was a super fun watch!
