Imagine you have to marry a king of a foreign country, he is childish, insuffarable and has no idea what to do with a woman and then you meet his doctor and it's Mads Mikkelsen.
I would immediately start laughing at the realization they will William Wallace me over what - or rather who - I must do. Literally (chuckles) I'm in danger meme.
Film #4 of the 30 days 30 countries challenge - DENMARK
Based on the title and description, I wrongly assumed that A Royal Affair would center mostly on an illicit and passionate relationship between a young Queen and her dumb husband's most trusted advisor. Even though this relationship turns out to be an important part of the film, I'd say the main focus of the film is on the political machinations behind a fascinating period of rapid human progress in eighteenth century Denmark. I found that it was engaging right from the very start and kept at a steady pace throughout. It really digs into the flaws and conflicting motivations of everyone involved and doesn't pull any punches in terms…
I can do exactly as I wish.
-Johann Friedrich Struensee
I wasn't looking forward to watching this all that much. The story of a queen that is married to a king that she doesn't love... it... somehow sounds familiar. At this point I would be shocked and amazed to see a film about a happily married king and queen, because going by the film industry there has never been a happy royal couple from any country in the history of mankind. Amuzingly enough most of these historical stories play out the same way!
Regardless of my reservations about the film, it still managed to pull me in and quite quickly I might add. I think what put this above other…
does a film have to be ‘good’ is it not enough to see mads mikkelsen and alicia vikander on your screen looking hot for 2 hours?
the only thing better than falling for Mads Mikkelsen is watching Alicia Vikander fall for Mads Mikkelsen.
I read a couple of LB reviews after watching, and the common opening paragraph was ‘I don’t really like period pieces’. Well, I’ll add my voice to the choir. And steal from Adam .. 'except Barry Lyndon'.
While the period pieces I’ve suffered ..er , enjoyed at the recommendation of my better half, I’ve liked enough, but nothing has come of these many watching that I've ever loved. The Royal Affair has changed that, and I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why.
First, I think that it was the fact that it was in Danish. The language and subtitles seemed to obfuscate the stuffy, pompous, and snide dialogue of the upper class that sometimes grates on me. But…
if mads was any other man i'd roast the fuck out of him..... but even with a rat tail..... he's hot
1. the scene where all the enlightenment laws were being passed gave me chills lol bitch repealing censorship that is so sexy
2. mads mikkelsen ponytail cheekbones lips also sexy
3. if 8tracks still existed and if i was 14 i would make an 8tracks playlist about this movie and i would include taylor swift's "illicit affairs" and the cover art would be a shot of the back of alicia vikander's neck, that is the vibe here, i feel like i'm regressing
The fact that I'm using this as both a ~palate cleanser~ between seasons of Hannibal AND a Mads Mikkelsen thirst watch...I'm working through some things

Come to me tonight?
The fact that the Queen and the King were obsessed with Johann, I guess you could call him The Love Doctor of Denmark.
i swear it was the first time i fucking cried my eyes out while watching a film. pure bitter heartbreaking masterpiece.
just a chill historical romance with zero outstanding or exceptional elements. perfect for a sunday afternoon in corona times but thats about it
Both the Queen AND King were in love with Mads Mikkelsen PROVE ME WRONG
Here's a sight for sore eyes tho.
The origin story of how Mads Mikkelsen is the backbone of Danish society yup yup
personally i find amazon prime's synopsis insulting: "the true story of an ordinary man who wins a queen's heart" mads mikkelsen is no ordinary man
I've watched this movie like 5 times, it is just so good.
It has a compact story, the setting is well displayed and you really get sucked into the universe that the movie creates.
