La maldición del tesoro de Atahualpa, Un hijo de Hombre
This is third world cinema!
Apart from a documentary I saw a few months ago, this is my first Ecuadorian movie, and it was great.
A Son of Man was the Ecuadorian submission for the Best Foreign Language Film in the latest Academy Awards.
With fantastic realism, this movie is about a father and his son, exploring the Amazonian Jungle looking for the lost treasure of Atahualpa (An Inca that never revealed the location of his treasure, to the Spanish conquerors.)
Just like they said in the movie, this is third world cinema, Ecuador is not a place with a big boom for the film industry or art in general. The acting wasn't that great and the ending was anticlimactic,…
Well this was a unexpected one. A Amazon exploration adventure mixed with all sorts of excentricities. The cinematography is pretty good and shooting it on extreme locations such as the Amazon and the Andes is quite a feat. Although the excentritities such as superstylized aesthetic and random or mystical beats do bring some fun to the runtime, the storytelling itsef felt a bit lacking to me. Characters aren’t given the oportunity to be connected with, rending the story unengaging and rushed. The constant voice-over does help keep a sense of unity and flow, but it also detaches the protagonism from the acrual performance from the actor on screen and gives the movie a more literary feel, like illustrations to a…
It takes almost 75 minutes for our protagonist to tell his father how insufferable he is, while the audience can deduce that within maybe 7.5 seconds. This is outrageously, exhaustingly self-indulgent, but there's great Steadicam work which was surely no easy feat in the Amazon.
