Apparently if you want your own great music biopic, you have to make it yourself
to buy a criterion and then actually go through with watching it on the blu ray player…nothing quite like it
Can't remember the last time a movie made me feel so emotionally drained. I felt like watching a musical today and just brute forced myself into watching this one while the inspiration struck, but now I feel like climbing out of wet sand. Fosse never lets up on the playful tone the film starts with but he slowly mixes in a darkness that makes the levity so grim. It's a shame Leland Palmer didn't act more, because I think her performance here feels so crucial and well-executed. Wish I wasn't so familiar with Bojack Horseman that a lot of the sequences that inspired parts of the show just reminded me of the show, but there's a lot that can't be…
Cannot really think of another movie like this. We sat for a bit afterwards trying to find the right adjective to describe it since "sad" wasn't really apt, and the closest thing I can come up with is "haunting." The scene of Katie and Michelle dancing is so heartbreaking on a second watch. He could've had it all. I don't think there are a ton of parallels in my life to Bob Fosse's (don't have a daughter, not working on "Chicago," black, etc.) but I couldn't help but see myself in the few parallels that do exist, which made it all the more bleak and made me all the more "wanting to go to the gym." Honestly a great movie to watch the same week you try to quit smoking cigarettes.
What kind of balls does it take to paint your own celluloid self portrait? A self portrait you know will be criticized as being self indulgent, egotistical, self aggrandizing, and self serving. Big Bob Fosse Balls; that’s what it takes.
All That Jazz isn’t a simple self portrait. Fosse frames the universal question of facing death with the canvas of his own life. As an Oscar, Tony, and Emmy acclaimed artist, that canvas is pretty rich. It’s how he cleverly weaves this story together, though, using the diverse palette of his career, output, adolescence, personal life, inner demons, and obsessions to paint his personal portrait is what makes it a masterwork.

dazzling self-portrait of a man forfeiting his life to his own genius, part 8 1/2, part MISHIMA, part SYNECDOCHE... all Fosse. if only i felt particularly engaged by the film's dramatic crux... much more interested in Fosse's obsessive meditations on death, but most disinterested in his most blunt depictions thereof (namely Jessica Lange as the angel, like a white Machiko Kyō in UGETSU). the funhouse mirror artistry fascinates as it ripples outwards, and the editing is a sublime example of film's infinite capacity for subsuming the forms of other mediums, but – at least for me now – this is the cinematic equivalent of jazz hands. also can't help but feel that Fosse took it mighty easy on himself in regards to how warmly Scheider plays him.
The amount of coverage in the “Bye Bye Love” sequence is like, yeah Bob, of course you had a heart attack
Bob Fosse's masterpiece is a towering achievement. This searing self-portrait is a work of art unlike any other. Roy Scheider's performance as Joe Gideon, a thinly veiled Fosse avatar, is the best of his career (ranking up there with Sorcerer). I also believe that this is the best edited film of all time.
Some filmmakers can't help but use their art to try to understand themselves, and we try to find ways to see ourselves in our work... but I can't think of another example of a filmmaker so unflinchingly dissecting themselves on celluloid. Life and death, art and commerce, and the full spectrum of a human being - failings and vices and all - are all nakedly displayed in this astonishing piece of filmmaking. One of the all-time greats, and a film without equal.
