A documentary on the life of Amy Winehouse, the immensely talented yet doomed songstress. We see her from her teen years, where she already showed her singing abilities, to her finding success and then her downward spiral into alcoholism and drugs.

The way she says to her father in the crowd, "Dad... Tony Bennett" when he's presenting her the Grammy. When she finally meets with him and it's unglamorous and she says "I just don't want to be wasting your time", and he has to comfort her and calm her down, "I have nothing else to do today."
And then they wheel out her little body and the first voice is Tony Bennett's saying what a wonderfully original voice in music she was.

The best found-footage horror movie of the year, which also just so happens to be a fiercely perceptive documentary about a great artist laid low by enablers and a host of mental problems. One of if not the best documentary I saw of that year. I saw at the Uptown theater with my mom. It was my first time seeing it but her second. Despite the fact that it was her second time she cried, and I couldn't blame her. Heartbreaking but inspirational.

I thought it was a very interesting choice to skip showing interviews, and use nothing but archival footage over them. I wasn’t really sure what the reasoning for that was, until I realized this documentary is 100% dedicated to the story of Amy Winehouse. There’s no tangents about other people, there’s hardly even any people on screen besides her most of the time. It almost felt like Amy helped make the documentary, and it’s pretty crazy that they used things she’s said in videos to almost answer questions as if they interviewed her for this doc.
This film is absolutely heart breaking, but I’m so glad it exists to show people how amazing Amy Winehouse really was. I certainly never knew.

It's the best opening scene of the year. Three fourteen-year-old girls are celebrating one of their birthdays, with another capturing it all on camcorder. From the start, one of them's a little different; she flings herself in front of the camera with a campy, attention-hogging glee. But you don't realise how different she is until they start singing 'Happy Birthday to You'. Suddenly, she transforms. She has a voice that can't possibly be coming from someone so young. It's a goof, of course, a silly jazz-singer skit to make her friends laugh... but it also kind of isn't.
