I don’t know why my expectations weren’t high for this movie, and although it might not be the most cinematographically groundbreaking movie of all time, I thought the story and thematic material was handled phenomenally. This is one of the best iterations of men directing a female coming of age narrative I’ve ever seen. The shame, the excitement, the pride, the interactions with friends, the interactions with parents: although it was set in the 60s, that only made it feel more crushingly relevant. They made the suitor so genuinely romantic, so convincingly chivalrous that I kept almost forgetting the gross abuse of power at the heart of the story, and that was exactly the point. I really thought this was a good movie!!
(Also Rosamund Pike with 60s hairstyles.... end me now thx)
