  I don’t want to reduce this movie to just its technical aspects because I think the storytelling is genuinely pretty great but…I don’t know how they did this. Like watching the scenes where a live action human is running around the jungle with big blue aliens and I know the whole world is digital and the aliens are digital but I can’t see a single seam. Is the live action guy shot on a green screen? Is he actually just animated? How is none of this real? How is that water not real? Or is some of it real? I don’t get it. In this time where we’re used to vfx doing anything, nothing has really impressed us in years, but this? This is fucking impressive. 

  Also Sigourney Weaver as her own teen alien daughter is such a wild move and she’s so great. Jim you madman.

  I actually have a very close friend who worked intimately with the editing team behind Avatar: The Way of Water, and lemme tell you the absolute nightmare it was to get James Cameron to cut ANYTHING from this film:

  The first day of the official editing process, the editing team showed up to the editing bay at 5:30 AM sharp (when Cameron told them to arrive). For 7 straight hours, they were left waiting at a locked door for Cameron to arrive. Eventually, fed up, the senior editor of the team stormed off and started to look for Cameron.

  30 minutes go by. No word.

  Finally, he came back to the team (who were all still waiting outside the locked…

  a bonafide clip show of jim cameron’s greatest hits. we got mechs, maternal rage, water, children being threatened, ships crashing and capsizing, hallways filling with water, claustrophobia, extraterrestrial anti-imperialism, water, and even water. i loved it. i think it was a very good move to shift focus away from Jake Sully (sucks, has no friends) to his kids (cool, best friend is Ras Trent)

  i love that there’s absolutely no cynicism or irony in this movie, even in the little bits of humor he peppers in there. no winking, no audience surrogates, no comic relief. honestly, not even that many action scenes! where another blockbuster would throw in a fight, james cameron knows that he’s got far more interesting things…
