"Don't give up your rights."
One of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Beauty and the Dogs is a work of masterful direction, the entire film being composed of nine long-takes, each one full of movement and chaos. Kaouther Ben Hania's newest film is a horrific symphony about rape and the justice system in Tunisia, and how the procedures of bureaucracy exist as protection for the institution and punishment for the abused. With a story and and cast this powerful (the lead actress is unstoppable), there's no way this movie wouldn't have been disturbing, but having to watch it all unfold in real time just adds to the feeling. The brief jumps in time between sequences, the actions we aren't…
Beauty and the Dogs reminded me of the one-take movie Victoria, because of the cinematographic energy. However, of course, there were several cuts and thank goodness.
The acting was good. The script was solid and it was based on a true story. It takes place in Tunisia, and it's sad to think of all the corruption that goes on in the government, there and elsewhere (USA included).

If you call this film cliched then you'd be right.
But if you call this film cliched without understanding why it HAS to be cliched then you're also wrong.
Beauty and the Dogs is a film about a woman who suffers through a night-long ordeal - and that's after she's been raped by two cops. She finds herself journeying from hospital to hospital to try and obtain a certificate to prove that she has been raped so she can press charges. But having lost her ID during the rape, she then can't be examined under Tunisian law. With no choice but to go…
"For the police all doors are open"
After a night of partying, Mariam (Mariam Al Ferjani) is raped by police officers. Completely shattered, her and Youssef (Ghanem Zrelly), a young man she met at the club, set out to get some justice and accountability from the officers who assaulted her. But in a conservative, patriarchal system, attempting to get past the Blue Wall is a nearly impossible feat.
I'll say up top, for those worried, the incident itself is not depicted in the film, which deals primarily with the direct aftermath. Mariam Al Ferjani's performance is incredible. She has to balance being in a near constant state of shock and terror and the courage to not buckle under the weight…
Just as I read this Kiarostami interview a night before, about chapters:
I envy people who read novels since they have much more freedom to use their imagination than a film audience. If a film could be structured like the layout of a book it would be ideal. For example, the last four lines of a chapter could end at the top of a page with the rest of the page blank and the following page sitting next to it. The new chapter then starts with a short title. This kind of format gives you an opportunity to pause and think. It often surprises me when people say, “I picked up a book and I couldn’t put down until I…
Let me share a poem by Filipina feminist poet and activist Joi Barrios-Leblanc, which I think fully encapsulates my feelings after watching this film.

Bring the plaintiff to the stand.

It's been a few days since i watched this. I wanted to get some distance from it so i could better write a review.
Obviously as you can tell by my ratings loved this movie and I'll just go ahead and say it right now, you should really watch this. It's great and it deserves attention. However despite me doing so, i wouldn't recommend this to everyone, cause it is very very uncomfortable.
The movies plot is very simple. A young girl is the victim of sexual assault and spends the night trying to do something about that. The movie then follow her and her struggle to file a report.
If i remember correctly the movie consists of 9 long…
